Tongue Tie

Constriction of the tongue in the mouth

What is tongue tie?

Tongue tie is a tethering of the bottom of the tip of the tongue to the floor of the mouth with a short, thick, or tight band of tissue. Tongue restrictions may also be observed at the cheeks and under the upper lip. This tethering restricts the movement of the tongue, preventing typical mouth movements like sticking out their tongue past their teeth. For infants it may cause issues with breast feeding and issues eating and speaking with older children.

How does therapy help tongue tie?

Therapy focuses on the neck, shoulder, and core muscles to release the tongue. These releases may need to be addressed to increase the effectiveness of tongue tie surgical releases.

Craniosacral releases are used to treat tongue tie issues. Some children need only one visit while other children require two or three visits.
